Gandon Editions  – All That Falls

All That Falls is a book whose subject is the work of the Irish artist Patrick Jolley. His untimely death at the age of 47 extinguished one of contemporary arts brightest lights. This book by Nicolas de Oliveira and Nicola Oxley is a rigorous testament of Patrick’s work and his voice and distinctive personal vision are omnipresent in its pages. He lived as he died, as an artist: travelling, taking photographs and making films. He had returned to Delhi to shoot the phenomenon of fog, which descends on the city every winter. It was to be his final project.

His work, which ranged across film, photography and installation, won considerable critical acclaim in Ireland and abroad. In his films, he resisted conventional narrative structure, preferring oblique, fragmentary sequences. Within the space of a single photographic image or a short film, he had the ability to conjure up an entire inner, subjective world.

Patrick Jolley was born in Co Down in 1964, and lived in Slane, Co Meath, until his sudden death in India, in January 2012. Before he passed away, Jolley was selected to take part in the 30th São Paulo Biennial in Brazil, and had been invited to mount a major retrospective of his work at Limerick City Gallery. Institutions that exhibited his work include the TATE, London, the Pompidou Centre, Paris, the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, the Berlin Biennial and Dublin Contemporary. Museums that hold Jolley’s work in their collection include the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Lyons Museum of Contemporary Art and Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.

The book, All That Falls, was near completion at the time of Jolley’s death and in the proceeding months flowed back and forth between Jolley, the authors and the publisher. It now gives us great pleasure to present the book and accompanying DVD exactly as Jolley had envisioned and planned.

All That Falls is available to purchase from the Irish Museum of Modern Art, The Glucksman and Limerick City Gallery for €25. It can also be ordered directly from the publisher, Gandon Editions who offer free p&p within Ireland.
